What is a Social Insurance Number?


A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a 9-digit number issued by Service Canada, a Canadian government department. You need a SIN before starting work in Canada, to file taxes as well as access government programs and benefits, if eligible.

For international students, having a SIN alone is not enough to allow to work in Canada. Make sure you are eligible to work in Canada.

How to apply for SIN if you are an international student?

You can only get your SIN after you’ve arrived in Canada, first need to get your study permit at the airport or border crossing before you can apply.

You you apply for a SIN online, or by mail, or request an in-person appointment if you face barriers applying online.

What you will need to apply for your SIN online?

  • A valid primary document that proves your identity and legal status in Canada (e.g. study permit that indicates that you are authorized to work on and off campus. If this remark is not on your study permit (SP) or if the SP indicates that you are not authorized to work, you will not be able to obtain a SIN).
  • A valid secondary document to confirm your identity – Passport
  • A proof of address (e.g. any document issued by Educational Institution that shows your address, a bank statement, a residential tenancy agreement/ lease
